Brett Favre may not be done after all. I thought he was really hanging it up after his heartfelt good-bye press conference earlier this year. But, if the reports are true, I was wrong about Favre’s decision to hang‘em up for good.
I am shocked that his agent has been fishing out trade offers for the hall of fame QB though. Maybe all the reasons Favre sited for his retirement before the press conference were absolutely real. I just can’t blame the Packers for wanting to move on because Favre’s indecision has finally started to impact the franchise. You can’t be the focal point if you’re hinting you want to retire every offseason. The team will eventually (and did) move in another direction once and for all.
Now the newly appointed GM Ted Thompson has been put into a tight spot. If Brett decides to comeback and requests a trade, Thompson will be hammered by hate mail from Packer nation. Who wants to be the guy that traded Brett Favre because he’s not happy with the organization? No matter which way you spin it Thompson will be the man fans will blame for not keeping their superstar happy.
Or perhaps we’ve fallen into the publicity trap set by Favre every offseason. He was probably wondering why his name wasn’t mentioned every five seconds on SportsCenter or the NFL Network and wanted to get back in the news. We are talking about the same individual who once held a press conference to ask why the press came because he hadn’t made a decision whether to retire or not and wanted to be left alone until he made a decision. What? It has to be about attention.
I just wish it was all over because I don’t know if I could handle watching another million hours of tributes after the 2008 season.
